Did that headline pull you in? It’s not mine, I stole it from Chuck Wendig’s book, The Kick-Ass Writer, which I am currently tearing through. The #1 is there because I will probably share more of this gem later. As for today, I will shamefully be about as creative as a low-fat Hot Pocket.
If you like in-your-face advice that involves shotguns, insanity, and “moderate” profanity then this book is for you. If not, you might want to keep on trucking.
For me, what is immediately refreshing about this book is that it doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t. This isn’t some spiritual quest to solve the mysteries of man and unleash your hidden potential. The information is blunt. It’s funny. It’s tongue in cheek. And it serves as another much needed call to action for any writer breaking into the writing game.
Chuck has a message for all of us
aspiring writers out there, and this message really hit me over the head.
“Here are the two states in which you may exist: person who writes, or person who does not. If you write, you are a writer. If you do no write, you are not. Aspiring is a meaningless null state that romanticizes Not Writing. It’s as ludicrous as saying, ‘I aspire to pick up that piece of paper that fell on the floor.’ Either pick it up, or don’t. I don’t want to hear about how your diaper’s full. Take it off, or stop talking about it” (p. 29).
There you have it folks. From the fingers of Mr. Wendig into your eye holes. Write. Just write.
As for me, I pushed out about 5000 words today (the most I’ve ever done in a day) in the mad rush to finish my first draft before the misses goes back to work in a week. But hey, who’s keeping track anyways? Keep writing, keep reading, and as always, stay sharp!
